Uganda is a land locked country and heavily relies on Mombasa and Dar-es-Salaam Ports to import/export her goods (especially bulky cargo). The two ports also serve Rwanda, Burundi, Southern Sudan and the eastern part of Democratic Republic of Congo [DRC], with some of these countries freight from Mombasa, passing through Uganda by Road.

Dar-es-Salaam Port, here on the right, is the principle Port of Tanzania and is a major sea outlet for the Republic of Zambia, Burundi, Malawi, Rwanda, Uganda, Zimbabwe, and Eastern parts of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The port is linked to its hinterland by a railway system, operated by the Tanzania Railways Corporation. The line goes to Mwanza on Lake Victoria shores to link the port with Uganda and Western Kenya.

Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), the port of Mombasa, serves Kenya and the transit countries of Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and Southern Sudan, among others. It’s linked to Uganda and Kenya's hinterland by a railway system nick-named “the lunatic line”. 

The line is operated by Kenya and Uganda Railways Corporation, and runs from Mombasa to Uganda’s main rail freight terminal (Kampala Railway Good shed). Other than rail freight, hundreds of haulage trucks operate the Mombasa to Kampala highway, transporting all types of cargo, like petroleum products and agricultural produce to mention but a few.
